Port Adelaide Gasworks Remediation

The former Port Adelaide Gasworks operated from the mid-1800s through to the early 1900s, supplying gas to homes and businesses across the area. The site played an important role in the region’s industrial development before closing in the 1920s.

By the late 1970s and 1980s, parts of the former gasworks were redeveloped into residential housing. While many original gasworks structures were removed, some legacy impacts from the site’s former industrial use remain.

Australian Gas Networks (AGN) as part of Australian Gas Infrastructure Group (AGIG), is now carrying out remediation works to address these legacy issues and ensure the land continues to be safe and suitable for residential use.

What’s the project about?

Between the late 1800s and early 1900s, the site was used as a gasworks facility that produced gas from coal. Like many similar sites around Australia, this resulted in soil contamination that, over time, was built over with residential housing.

Decades later, parts of the former industrial land were redeveloped for residential use in line with planning requirements at the time. As environmental standards have evolved, further investigations have been undertaken to better understand historic conditions at the site.

Recent environmental investigations identified areas of soil containing residual contamination associated with the former gasworks operations. While this contamination does not pose an immediate health risk remediation is required to ensure the land is suitable for long-term residential use and meets modern environmental standards.

The project is being undertaken in accordance with South Australia’s environmental legislation and is regulated by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). An independent EPA-accredited Site Contamination Auditor provides oversight to ensure the investigations and remediation approach meet regulatory requirements.

Timeline

Stage 1 works will commence on the 5th of July and take approximately 3 weeks to complete.

Why does this work need to take place?

Remediation is required to ensure the land meets current environmental standards for residential use and to manage areas of historical soil contamination associated with the former gasworks site.

The works will involve:

  • The targeted removal and disposal of affected soil at licensed facilities

  • Measures to manage dust, traffic and site safety during works

  • Ongoing oversight by the EPA and an independent Site Contamination Auditor

For further information, please refer to the Frequently Asked Questions section.

Where is the work happening?

The remediation zone includes properties located within the boundaries of Alice Street, Henry Street, and Rosetta Street in Rosewater.

See the map below to understand the areas included in this remediation project.

What's Involved

The remediation works will take place in several carefully managed stages:

Preparation

  • Installing temporary fencing and safety signage
  • Preparing the site for works

Site Excavation

    • Removing identified soil in a controlled manner
    • Transporting material to licensed facilities
    • Continuous dust and air monitoring during works

Restoration

  • Replacing soil with clean, approved material
  • Restoring landscaping and surface areas

Completion

    • Removing temporary equipment
    • Returning the site to residents

All works will be carried out under EPA oversight and independently audited to ensure compliance with environmental standards.
